Virginia Vote by Mail Application

Statewide Risk-Limiting Audit of the Results of the November 3, 2020 Election

When are elections held?

November General Elections

Statewide general elections are held each year on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November for the purpose of electing federal or state executive and legislative representatives. Local elected representatives may also appear on the November general election ballot. The election schedule for federal and state offices is as follows:

Federal Offices

Office Term Next Election
President and Vice President of the United States Four years 2024
United States Senate Six years (two seats, staggered) 2024
House of Representatives Two years 2022

Virginia Offices

Office Term Next Election
Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General Four years 2025
Virginia Senate Four years 2023
Virginia House of Delegates Two years 2025

Most counties and cities also elect constitutional officers -- offices prescribed by the Constitution of Virginia, unless the county or city's charter provides otherwise -- in November general elections. These offices are sheriff, attorney for the commonwealth, treasurer, commissioner of the revenue, and clerk of the Circuit Court. These offices are usually elected in odd-numbered years and serve four-year terms, except the clerk of the Circuit Court, which serves an eight-year term.

Lexington elects the mayor and City Council members in the November General Election of each even numbered year. Officials take office January 1 and serve four-year staggered terms.

Primary Elections

The Democratic and Republican Parties may choose to select their nominees for offices in November general elections through primary elections. Primaries, if held, are always on the second Tuesday in June.

Special Elections

Special elections are held when a vacancy occurs in any elected office or when a referendum election is called. Depending upon the timing of the vacancy or the call for the referendum, a special election may take place on the same day as a general election. Special elections are always held on Tuesdays.

When are the polls open?

On Election Day, the polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. If you are waiting in line when the polls close, you will be allowed to vote.

Where do I vote?

All Lexington City residents vote in the Lexington Precinct at Piovano Building (formerly The Life Saving Crew Building) at 350 Spotswood Drive. The voter card mailed to each voter when he/she registers identifies the polling place and address. If you have a question, contact the Voter Registrar Office at 540-462-3706.

Do I have to show identification at the polls?

Effective July 1, 2020, early voting/in-person absentee voting is now available during the 45 days before an election. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The two Saturdays before each election, in-person absentee voting is also available. Registered voters are encouraged to vote absentee by mail because of COVID-19. Also, effective July 1, 2020, a photo ID is no longer required; however, a voter ID remains a requirement. Please visit the VA Department of Elections website for a listing of acceptable IDs.

If you do not provide the proper identification at the polls, you will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot. However, this vote will not count unless you provide the required valid photo identification to the General Registrar's Office by noon on the Friday following the election.

How do I get election results for Lexington and other Virginia localities?

The Virginia Department of Elections posts unofficial election results as soon as they are available from the precincts. Official results are available 7 days after the election.
