Personal Property Tax
Lexington imposes a tax on personal property. The City of Lexington is a prorating locality. Even though the tax year runs from January 1 to December 31, you are only billed for the period of time your vehicle has situs in Lexington. The commissioner of revenue assesses personal property and determines tax due.
The treasurer mails bills for the personal property tax twice a year. The first payment, payable to Lexington Treasurer, is due June 5, and the second is due December 5. These bills can be paid online.
Personal Property Tax Relief
The Personal Property Tax Relief Act of 1997 provides tax relief for vehicles locally registered within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Tax Relief Act provides that the tax on the first $20,000 of value on your personal car, motorcycle, and pickup or panel truck under 7,501 pounds and not used for business will be reduced by a percentage designated by City Council each year. Currently, the city eliminates the tax on vehicles valued at $1,000 or less.
The commissioner of the revenue determines whether a vehicle qualifies for this tax relief.
If You Do Not Receive a Property Tax Bill
Anyone who owns personal property or acquires additional property, excluding those with exemptions, should receive a tax bill approximately four weeks prior to the due dates of June 5 and December 5. If you do not receive a bill, contact the Treasurer's Office before the due date at 540-462-3707. The appropriate information can be given over the telephone. It is preferable, but not necessary, to have the bill or a copy of the bill in order to make payment.
