Position Description:
The City of Lexington is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT.
Position Perform difficult Fire and Rescue work serving as an employee in the Fire Department; does related work as required. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lieutenant and superior officers (career & volunteer) in the chain of command. Supervision is exercised over subordinate Fire and Rescue Personnel (career & volunteer) in the chain of command. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal background check, DMV motor vehicle record check, and drug screening.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Working on an assigned shift; providing emergency medical care, firefighting, extrication, hazardous materials and rescue duties; ensuring safety of the public and personnel working with you; maintaining records and files; preparing reports;
- Participates in all needed fire and rescue duties or assignments;
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual checks of apparatus and equipment;
- Assists in maintaining apparatus, tools, and equipment and performs repairs as needed;
- Conducts equipment and apparatus checks and preventative maintenance;
- Follow directives, rules and regulations;
- May deal with restricted and confidential information and material;
- May be assigned to special duty such as attending meetings or public relations activity to represent the department;
- Participates in the preparation of daily, special and periodic plans or reports;
- Performs all duties of a Firefighter or EMT;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Fire Department; thorough knowledge of modern fire and rescue methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City, the first due response area in the County and the location of important buildings; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to assign, instruct and review the work of subordinates; ability to deal firmly and tactfully with subordinate employees and the public; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of fire and rescue tools and equipment and the operation of a fire and rescue vehicles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Knowledge fire and rescue apparatus, tools and equipment and how to maintain and repair same. Experience and certification and training as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation high school and considerable experience as a firefighter and EMS provider and experience in providing both services. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Minimum Required Certifications:
- Firefighter 1
- EVOC 3
- Virginia EMT-B or ability to obtain reciprocity
Physical Requirements:
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens, heat, smoke, hazardous materials and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
