The Mayor and City Council of the City of Lexington are pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. James M. Halasz as its new City Manager. Mr. Halasz is a resident of South Boston and most recently was employed as the County Administrator of Halifax County. Mr. Halasz has extensive experience in Virginia local government management having served for over six years in Halifax County and over 12 years in the City of Staunton before that. He also has experience working in academia from his experience as the Director of Personnel and Purchasing at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee. Eight years as Village Manager in towns in Michigan round out his professional experience. Mr. Halasz holds a Master in Public Administration from Michigan State University, completed the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia and is a member of ICMA, the International City/County Management Association, and VLGMA, the Virginia Local Government Management Association.

Mr. Halasz replaces Noah Simon who departed the City on April 30, 2019. Ms. Brenda Garton, ICMA-CM Retired, has served as Interim City Manager since then.

Mayor Frank Friedman expressed his pleasure at filling the City Manager position: “Assisted by The Berkley Group, we had a strong pool of over 35 candidates and Mr. Halasz impressed Council with his experience, his understanding of Lexington, and his approach to community building. We look forward to having Jim lead our city staff. We invite all in Our Community to welcome Jim and his wife Deb as they join and contribute to our community.”

Mayor Friedman expressed his appreciation to The Berkley Group and the City Council for their commitment, passion, and diligence throughout the recruitment process. He added, “I also want to express my and the entire Council’s sincere thanks to Brenda Garton for her leadership and guidance through this transition. She has done a great job, and we are most grateful.”

Mr. Halasz stated, “I am excited about this opportunity to live in and serve the charming and unique City of Lexington and I look forward to being an active member of the community.”

Mr. Halasz will begin his duties as City Manager on Friday, November 8th.
