Zoning Ordinance Update: City Council Work Session and Public Hearing

This May, Planning Commission recommended approval of a revised Zoning Ordinance for the City of Lexington, which is now set to go before City Council at a work session and public hearing for final decision. 

The City Council work session is scheduled on August 10, 2017 and the City Council public hearing is scheduled on September 7, 2017 for the adoption of the revised Zoning Ordinance. The work session is an opportunity for Councilmembers to ask questions of staff regarding the amendments proposed in the draft Zoning Ordinance; the public is welcome to attend the work session and listen to the discussion between Council and staff. The public hearing on September 7, 2017 is an opportunity for the public to provide additional comments on the proposed update. 

The Planning Commission and Planning staff worked for over a year to substantially update the entire Lexington Zoning Ordinance and the Planning Commission made a recommendation on May 11, 2017 after holding two public hearings and many work sessions. It is the Planning Commission recommended version of the zoning ordinance that is being presented to City Council for their consideration. 

The City Council work session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, August 10, 2017 in the cafeteria of Waddell Elementary School at 100 Pendleton Place. 

The City Council public hearing is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 7, 2017 also in the cafeteria of Waddell Elementary School at 100 Pendleton Place.

State code requires property owners affected by any Zoning map or text amendment be provided a written notification at least 5 days prior to a public hearing.  The proposed Zoning Ordinance amendments are extensive and this notice is therefore being mailed to all Lexington property owners in addition to the required newspaper advertisements.

A copy of the draft Zoning Ordinance is available for public review and examination between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the Planning and Development Department located on the second floor of Lexington City Hall, 300 East Washington Street, and the draft can also be viewed online at http://lexingtonva.gov/gov/depts/planning_dev/default.htm.
