Street Resurfacing

Major street resurfacing will begin at various locations around the City on Tuesday 30 May and take about 30 to 45 calendar days to complete, all weather permitting.  The work will be performed by PAVCON Inc. and all worked will be performed Monday through Friday at work hours indicated in the paragraph below.

  • The planned sequence beginning on 30 May is Barger Drive, Waddell Street, Allen Avenue, Hutcheson Street, Mary Lane, McCorkle Drive, Dorman Lane, and Carruthers Street.  Most of these streets will be patched as needed and then receive a complete hot mix asphalt overlay.  Work will be performed between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • The next sequence of streets will be milled and overlaid beginning on or about 19 June include North and South Jefferson Street (from North Main Street to White Street), West Nelson Street (from McLaughlin Street to South Main Street), West Washington Street (from Lee Avenue to South Main Street), and West Preston Street (from Lee Avenue to South Main Street).  Work on these downtown streets will be performed at night, between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
  • The final sequence of streets to be resurfaced on or about 26 June include North Main Street (from Maiden Lane to Cameron Hall) and Diamond Street (from North Main Street to Maury Street).  These final two streets will be resurfaced between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • A Public Works crew will follow soon after the above resurfacing work completion to mark and stripe new pavement.

Rockbridge alerts will be issued as the work progresses and additionally the contractor will provide notices in residential areas. Residents and businesses are asked to avoid parking on the street when work is scheduled to preclude negatively impacting the contractor’s work.

Citizens should expect noise and some dust, as well as disruption to normal traffic flow.  Also, there will be some gap between the time a street is patched or milled and final asphalt overlay.  This is regrettable, but unavoidable.  When this street resurfacing work is compete, motorists will experience greatly improved ride quality and safety; and see a marked improvement in street appearance.  Lastly, again the above schedule is weathered dependent and could also extend due to unforeseen conditions requiring more work.

Motorists travelling through these areas are requested to exercise extreme care and caution when driving through the work areas.  Your cooperation and patience is appreciated.
