The city will replace water and sewer main systems, reconstruct concrete curbs, sidewalks and driveway entrances, as well as the roadway itself on Taylor Street between Wallace Street and Houston Street. Public Works will start the project by self-performing all utility work. Then, the concrete replacement and roadway reconstruction will be independently and publicly bid.
The city will need to close Taylor Street between Wallace and Houston Streets to through traffic during construction, which is anticipated to begin March 25, 2019 and last through the end of August 2019. Residents will have access to their homes throughout the project.
Update May 2019: Water and sewer will be complete within the next two weeks. The bid for this part of the project was awarded to Virginia Infrastructure. The city held a pre-construction meeting in early May and a Notice to Proceed was issued to the contractor on Monday, May 6, 2019. The city Engineer handed out Impact Notices to neighboring residents prior to the commencement of work. The contractor that is conducting the summer repaving schedule will then reconstruct the roadbed and repave, likely in July.
This project is funded through a 50% cost match with Virginia Department of Transportation revenue sharing.
