Recycling Truck
Recycling Collection Equipment Change
On March 5, 2012, the Lexington Public Works Department began collecting recycling using an orange solid waste truck. This change was made to gain some efficiency in collecting recyclables. There was no change to scheduled collection days and no change to materials collected.

The truck is well-marked with recycling signs and decals to distinguish it from the solid waste truck. Rest assured, all materials collected in this truck will be recycled. When the primary recycling truck needs maintenance or repair, a stake body truck will be the backup.

Recycling Guidelines

Recyclable Items
All paper products should be put in a clear plastic bag. Examples are:
  • Books
  • Cereal boxes
  • Dry food containers
  • Junk mail
  • Magazines
  • Newspaper
  • Office paper
Everything else should be placed in another clear plastic bag. All containers should be rinsed out and should be empty of water or any other content. Lids or caps must be removed as they could present a danger during the baling process. Examples of other recyclables are:
  • Plastic bottles and containers numbered 1 through 7 without caps or lids
  • Aluminum and tin cans, foil, trays
  • Aerosol cans (must be empty)
  • All colors of glass bottles and jars without caps or lids
Non-Recyclable Items
Items which are not recyclable include:
  • Rigid plastic toys
  • Polystyrene foam (egg cartons, packing materials, plates, cups)
  • Waxed milk or juice cartons
  • Batteries
Large Items
White goods, refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, dryers, hot water tanks, etc., should be placed at the collection point for pick up by the brush truck. Visit the Brush Collection page for more information.

Curbside Recycling Collection
Below is information for recycling collection for businesses and residences.

Business curbside recycling will be picked up Monday thru Saturday.

When a bag is full, place it beside your regular garbage at the pickup location, or beside a dumpster if your business has one, on a Monday or Wednesday and it will be collected.

Several large recycling dumpsters are located throughout the Central Business District and at other business locations for cardboard to be placed in, so use those if they are convenient. If not, place the cardboard beside your recycling bags, and it will be picked up on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Residential recyclables will be collected on the same day as regular garbage collection, and must be placed in a clear plastic bag. Do not put garbage in clear trash bags.

When a bag is full, place it beside your regular garbage at the pickup location and it will be collected. Cardboard should be broken down or flattened and placed at the collection point.

For residents who live in the Central Business District or live in apartment buildings or over businesses in the downtown area, your recyclables will be collected on Wednesdays along with the business recycling collection. Place your clear plastic bags and cardboard at your normal pickup location or beside the dumpster of the business and it will be collected every Wednesday.

All recycling collection routes will be picked up on all holidays except Christmas Day, which will be collected on the next work day after Christmas.
